Holunape CD Release Party

Holunape will hold a CD release party at Gordon Biersch, Aloha Tower Marketplace on Sunday, January 15, 2006 from 5 – 9pm, to celebrate the release of “He ‘Olu.” They will be joined by their friends from Na Palapalai, Ho’okena, ‘Ale’a and Pilioha for an evening of great Hawaiian music and hula. You may have previously seen them under the name “Kilinahe”. I caught them once at the Aloha Tower Marketplace some time back and they were outstanding.

Funny story: I went to dinner with a colleague at Aloha Tower Marketplace a few years ago. We walked by Kapono’s and I could hear someone calling “‘Anakala Keola” (Uncle Keola). It was a grown man’s voice, so I figured it couldn’t be for me (I wasn’t that old!). I heard it again, so looked around, didn’t see anyone I recognized. The third time he called “‘Anakala Keola Donaghy!” and I tried to figure out where it was coming from. I finally looked up onstage, and saw it was Kama Hopkins, performing with the group Kilinahe.

I’ve since grudgingly gotten used to being called “Uncle” by grown men and women. No use fighting it anymore.

The Net Is a Boon for Indie Labels

Are the methods of major labels going the way of the dinosaur? According to this article from the New York Times, everybody is hurting, but perhaps the independent labels are hurting less.

Mahalo to Bernie Goldbach for the pointer.

Island Music Ring Tones

This feature from the Honolulu Star-Bulletin talks about how Hawaiian Telcom and Mountain Apple have teamed up to offer cell phone ring tones featuring popular Hawaiian and island music. For $2.49 a pop, it’s 2 1/2 times what you can buy songs for on iTunes or other services, but saves you the trouble of trying to bypass iTunes copy-protection scheme and re-encoding them as cell phone tones. Some of the more popular tones are from Rap Reiplinger, The Brothers Cazimero, Hawaiian Style Band, and of course, Israel Kamakawiwo’ole.

Kainani Goes Irish!

My friend Conn at the Irish language blog An tImeall has done a podcast in which he talks about Hawaiian music, and features Kainani Kahaunaele‘s “Ka Hīnano O Puna”. How’s that for some cross-cultural pollination! The slightly different voice you hear at the beginning of the podcast is me, introducing myself in Irish, and saying that I live in Hawai’i.

For those of you who have never heard Irish (sometimes simply called “Gaelic” outside of Ireland), you may be surprised. Contrary to popular belief, Irish is not English with the heavy brogue you may have heard in movies or in Lucky Charms commercials. It’s a very different language, and further away from English than other European languages such as German and French.

Kapono Beamer on Slack Key and Grammys

There is a short feature in the Pacific Business News regarding Kapono Beamer and his “Slack Key Dreams of the Ponomoe” release, and wants to let the public know that the release does include a significant amount of Hawaiian language material – the release contains 10 vocal tracks, eight of them containing Hawaiian language, and four of them exclusively Hawaiian language. Only three tracks are instrumental. My apologies for Kapono for not clarifying that on my previous posts on the topic.

Paiva on the Hawaiian Album Grammy Finalists

The Honolulu Advertiser’s Derek Paiva surveys the local music community for reactions to the announcement of the Hawaiian Album of the Year nominees, and includes some of my thoughts. The quotes that appear in the article were things that he and I discussed on the phone; here is what I emailed him yesterday:

I really have mixed feelings about the final list. While I personally believe that some of releases which featured Hawaiian language material were more deserving finalists than a couple that did make the final ballot, I don’t want people to think that I believe slack key guitar doesn’t have a place in the category either. I’ve spoken to many in our industry who feel that mainland voters in the “Folk” category are having a major impact, and I agree. Some have suggested that the folk, new age and acoustic guitar aficionados simply see the term “slack key” and vote for it base on the title. I initially thought that way as well, but I know people like this; they are knowledgeable of the music and the musicians, and own many of the recordings. They’re voting what they know and love, which is not necessarily what the majority of the Hawai’i members of the Recording Academy vote for.

I think it is regrettable that there cannot be separate categories for recordings which more prominently feature Hawaiian language material, one for Hawaiian instrumental recordings, as well as one for more contemporary, non-Hawaiian language material. Unfortunately, there are not enough releases put out each year for the Academy to consider this. As it is we have a single “catch-all” category. For those of us who wish to see recordings which feature Hawaiian language more prominently honored with a Grammy, it may be a while before we have a Grammy winner that we can get truly excited about.

If you are a Honolulu Advertiser reader who are viewing NahenaheNet for the first time, welcome!

Local musicians view Grammys as mixed blessing (From the Star-Bulletin)

The Honolulu Star-Bulletin’s Tim Ryan runs down the Hawaiian Album Grammy finalists, and also discusses the Grammy forum held in Honolulu several months ago. I was interviewed by the Honolulu Advertiser’s Derek Paiva this morning for a story that may appear tomorrow or at a later date. I’ll post my email to him later.

It is disappointing that the Hawai’i membership has not grown since the final push for the award was made several years ago. It’s also disappointing that more Hawai’i acts did not nominate themselves in the categories that they are eligible in. At one meeting I attended, a few people from labels that feature more contemporary forms of island music quipped “Why should we join if our releases aren’t eligible?” Well, they are eligible in other categories, and if enough of them started to appear on the Grammy ballot in the appropriate categories, there would be a greater chance of their being as separate category for more contemporary forms of island music.

And The Grammy Nominees Are…

Best Hawaiian Music Album
(Vocal or Instrumental.)

  • Slack Key Dreams Of The Ponomoe
    Kapono Beamer
    [Kapono Beamer Enterprises, Ltd]

  • Sweet & Lovely
    Raiatea Helm
    [Raiatea Helm Records]

  • Kiho’alu – Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar
    Ledward Ka’apana
    [Rhythm & Roots Records]

  • Slack Key Guitar: The Artistry Of Sonny Lim
    Sonny Lim
    [Palm Records]

  • Masters Of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar – Vol. 1
    Various Artists
Daniel Ho, Paul Konwiser & Wayne Wong, producers
    [Daniel Ho Creations]

There were five releases on the preliminary ballot that contained the words “Slack Key Guitar” in the title, and four that made the final ballot. Hmm. I looked around on the final ballot, and it does not appear that any Hawai’i act made the final ballot in any other categories in which they were eligible.
