Kainani Goes Irish!

My friend Conn at the Irish language blog An tImeall has done a podcast in which he talks about Hawaiian music, and features Kainani Kahaunaele‘s “Ka Hīnano O Puna”. How’s that for some cross-cultural pollination! The slightly different voice you hear at the beginning of the podcast is me, introducing myself in Irish, and saying that I live in Hawai’i.

For those of you who have never heard Irish (sometimes simply called “Gaelic” outside of Ireland), you may be surprised. Contrary to popular belief, Irish is not English with the heavy brogue you may have heard in movies or in Lucky Charms commercials. It’s a very different language, and further away from English than other European languages such as German and French.
