Manu For Oha, Cont'd….

You may noticed that I put a campaign ad for Manu in my right hand navigation column (how could you miss it). I just found read an endorsement letter from Robert Uluwehi Cazimero in the Moloka‘i Times, and that Manu has a campaign site as well.

Ho‘omālie: Only You

Ho‘omālie has released their debut, “Only You”. Although the musicians in Ho‘omalie have been around for a while and are established entertainers in their own right. The members of Ho‘omalie are Zanuck Lindsey, Kimo Hussey, John Enos, and Lopaka Ho‘opi‘i. Zanuck is probably the most well known…playing with groups such as Kalapana, Hula Joe & the Hutjumpers, Na Leo, Rockhard Hawaii, and also as part of Fiji’s backup band. Kimo Hussey is an accomplished ‘ukulele player and released a CD called “Eminent ‘Ukulele.” He also colaborated with Carol Wilcox and Puakea Nogelmeier on the best-selling songbook “He Mele Aloha.” John Enos has played with the groups Low Down and Ho‘ike Trio. Lopaka Ho‘opi‘i is a fireman by day, and is also with the group Loea.

Among the 15 songs on the release are Pua Mae ‘Ole, Pōhai Ke Aloha, My Sweet Sweeting, Ku‘u Lei ‘Awapuhi, Model T, The Queen’s Prayer, Only You, Ua Mau, Kawohikūkapulani, and ‘Ekolu Mea Nui/Makalapua.

Random Synaptic Discharges…

I’ve been making too many short posts recently, so am going to put a lot of miscellaneous thoughts in here to wrap up the week…

On the Kenneth Makuakāne front, his debut Hawaiian recording, Makuakāne is now in much broader distribution and should be in retailers statewide by now. I’ll be checking our Hilo Borders this weekend. Auntie Maria reported to me earlier today that she has nearly sold out of her first shipment of the release, so order soon. I’ve not found it in the pages of other online retailers yet, but will point to them when I find it. Maria played some music off of it on her radio program this morning, and reported that the phone lines lit up with people wanting to find out who the artist was. I’ll be visiting Mākela on the Alana I Kai Hikina radio program on KWXX in Hilo this Sunday at 5PM to talk about the release and play some cuts.

Kenneth also reported that he was notified today that he was voted on to the HARA board, but we were both sad to learn that Lea Uehara will not be returning to the board. Lea was one of the best and most active members of the board and the one who was most communicative with me on getting information on their website. Congratulations, Kenneth! I understand that the board has hired a real webmaster, and I will be passing the baton on sometime later this year or early next year.

In addition to the ‘Ukes For Kids gig I mentioned last night, Brittni Paiva has a new CD coming out on November 7.

It looks like it will be a banner year for Hawaiian Christmas releases. In addition to the previously mentioned new releases by Keali‘i Reichel and the Brothers Cazimero, Keahiwai has a Christmas release due out on November 14.

That’s all the news that’s fit to print today, have a great weekend, everyone. A new podcast should be ready for Sunday.

One Grammy Vote Up For… Consideration

I’m still holding onto my Grammy preliminary ballot, and have selected four entries to cast my vote for, but am wavering on the final choice. I’m not going to offer to trade it for anyone else’s vote – it’s against the rules and highly unethical (IMHO). However, if you have a release on the Grammy ballot and would like me to consider it, send me an email and tell me why. No need to send me a copy, if there is audio online just point me to it. I can’t promise I’ll vote for it, but if you make a compelling case I’ll consider it. If I get no emails I’ll probably just return my ballot with four choices in the Hawaiian Album category.

Makuakāne Awareness Campaign

Since Kenneth Makuakāne’s solo debut has been in limited distribution since it’s release on Sept. 29, we’re concerned that many members of The Recording Academy have not had a chance to hear it in order to give it due consideration for the 2006 Hawaiian Grammy Award. In order to compensate for that fact, Kenneth are coordinating an awareness campaign, and I have set up a private area on his website where Grammy and Nā Hōkū Hanohano voters will be able to hear the CD in its entirety – all 20 songs from beginning to end. If you are a member of the Academy or HARA, all you need to do to gain access to this area is to email me at keola@nahenahe.net and I will send you the login information.

I want to make it clear that I do not expect anyone to vote for Makuakāne out of friendship with me or anything I may have done for artists here on Nahenahe.net. Nor am I going to offer to scratch anyone’s back by voting for them if they offer to vote for Makuakāne, so please don’t ask me to do that. I’ve already chosen the releases I’m going to vote for, based on their quality and being the best representative of our Hawaiian music tradition. And yes, at least one of my choices has the term “slack key” in the title ;-) Our only reason for doing this is to give members of the academies the opportunity to hear the music and consider the release for nomination.

In order to be fair, if there is any other artist out there that is running a similar awareness campaign on behalf of their release, please let me know and I’ll point to you. If you would simply like a pointer to your Grammy entry release page, send it to me and I will link to it.

2006 Hawaiian Grammy Entries

I just received my Grammy ballot, and have posted the 2006 Hawaiian Grammy Entries. Please note that the listed artists are “entries” and not “nominees”. The Recording Academy reserves the use of the term “nominee” for those artists that make the finall ballot. Congratuations to all!

If any Hawai‘i artists have entered themselves in any other category please let me know so I can consider voting in that category. I found Henry Kapono’s “Wild Hawaiian” also entered in “Album of the Year”, but probably won’t have time to go through every category. I tend to only vote in the Folk, Rock and Jazz categories for which I have some interest and expertise.

Hawai‘i Musicians at HIFF

Hawai‘i Night (Thursday, October 26) at the Hawai‘i International Film festival kicks off with “The Shimmering”, an ethereal piece based on the shark tale “It Swims When You Sleep” by Hawaiian singer-songwriter Keola Beamer. The ‘aumakua (protective deity) of Hawaiian mythology is the foundation of this fascinating underwater tale. To be followed by a performance by Keola Beamer!

“Made of Music: The Story of John Cruz” chronicles Nā Hōkū Hanohano award winner John Cruz, from hanabata days in Palolo Valley, to years of struggle on the East Coast, to ultimately achieving personal and professional equilibrium back in the islands he loves. However, unashamedly, Cruz delves into his dark past, including his bout with drug addiction that tears his family and shakes his very foundation. From the dark comes a soulful inspiration in his music, which he calls “acoustic soul.” To be followed by a performance from John Cruz!

Digital Arts and Licensing Seminar On Maui tomorrow

Musicians, writers, website and game designers, photographers, video and other visual artists and their managers will benefit from a four-hour seminar from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., followed by free private consultations, on Friday, October 20th at the Maui Research and Technology Center.  The seminar is sponsored by the Maui Small Business Development Center and Paradise Patent Services, Inc.  The fee is $25.

A large part of the business of making music CDs, videos, websites, and games is using copyright and trademark laws to establish your rights as a licensor (granting Intellectual Property (IP) rights to others, or stopping infringement) or as a licensee (obtaining IP rights from a rights holder, or defending against alleged infringement).   Understanding the licensing of digital arts is also key to taking advantage of Hawaii’s tax incentives for producers of digital performing arts products.  Digital Rights Management is a new, fast-evolving tool for administration of licenses of digital arts products.

'Makuakāne' More Widely Available This Week

Kenneth Makuakāne’s new CD was in limited distribution since its release on Sept 29, however, it is much more widely available now, and should have made it into most bricks and mortar stores as well as online retailers this week. Auntie Maria is taking on orders, and you can check Kennethʻs release page which will point to all online retailers who are stocking it. If you have trouble finding it at your favorite retailer please contact me and I’ll let the distributor know.

Kenneth has been busy setting up promotional appearances at retailers, on TV and other venues. As soon as they are lined up he’ll post them on his website and I will also do so here.

Recording industry sues another 8,000 file sharers

The recording industry group has filed 8,000 new lawsuits in 17 countries, bringing the total number of suits it has filed outside the U.S. to 13,000, the IFPI announced Tuesday. That’s on top of about 18,000 lawsuits already filed in U.S.

Early Christmas Tidings

Usually I don’t get very excited about Christmas releases, and it seems as though that it is only every two or three years that a Hawaiian Christmas release comes along that I get excited about. It’s barely mid-October, and there are already two to talk about!

The Brothers Cazimero have have won over 30 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards and a Grammy Award nomination for their 2005 release, “Some Call It Aloha…Don’t Tell.” Their Christmas releases have become classics, and Caz Christmas will likely join their ranks. There is more than just a rehash of Christmas classics, but a number of new compositions as well.

Keali’i Reichel has been topping Hawaiian music charts, dominating radio for the past dozen years, and he also was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2005. I can’t think of anyone who I have wanted to see record a Christmas release from more, and he finally has delivered something for everyone’s stocking this year, with Maluhia. I’m particularly excited as one of my compositions, “Ke Aloha Kalikimaka”, will be on the release. I’ll be premiering that cut on a future podcast as the release date gets closer.

Caz Christmas is available right now, and Maluhia is available for pre-order; its official ship date is Nov. 21.

It’s certainly been a year for me to remember, with Kenneth Makaukāne’s CD come out with so many mele that we collaborated on, and to have Keali‘i record one of my compositions is certainly the icing on the cake. Not just because he is who he is in the Hawai‘i recording industry, but also because he was one of those people who really inspired me to take the path I did with the Hawaiian language back when I was first starting out on Maui. If it were not for the kindness and inspiration of people like Keali‘i, Hōkūlani Holt-Padilla, Kī‘ope Raymond and Kawaikapuokalani Hewett, I certainly would not be doing what I am doing today, and probably would have never written a single mele, much less have so many recorded in a single year. Mahalo iā ‘oukou pākahi a pau! I haven’t known Kenneth as long, but he’s been no less inspirational to work with, and helped me gain the confidence to go to the next level. What a year!
