Music Conference Presentation .PDF

As I mentioned previously, I promised the participants at the Maui Hawaiian Music Conference that I’d post a .pdf copy of my PowerPoint presentation, so here it is. I hope to do a podcast of the presentation, perhaps in an expanded version, sometime next month. E nanea (enjoy!).

The Future of Music Distribution: Your Computer

Mahalo to Kenneth for forwarding this article from EQ Magazine. It talks about some of the issues that were discussed at this past weekend’s Hawaiian Music Conference on Maui. The conference had the best turnout of any I’ve attended so far, and most of the panelists (some of whom have presented at every conference) have honed their presentations well. I promised to post my PowerPoint presentation here when I got back, and will do so when I get back into the office.

A big mahalo to all of the presenters, especially to Skylark Rossetti, Mark McGuffie and the rest of the HIEDB staff for organizing the event, and to Kamehameha School on Maui for hosting it at their spectacular campus.

Final Reminder. Really!

Kenneth Makuakāne give us the absolutely positively last reminder about tomorrow’s Hawaiian Music Conference at the Kamehameha Schools campus on Maui. It is probably too late to call or email Skylark to register, but for you procrastinators out there, you might be able to register on-site.

Kenneth has something special up his sleeve for the keynote presentation, I’m going to try to video tape it and put it online at some point. I put together a PowerPoint presentation and will probably turn it into a podcast and put it online next week. At the very least I’ll post the presentation as a .pdf.

Holunape's Tribute To Lena Machado Tonight

The gentlemen of Holunape will host “A Tribute To Hawai‘i’s Songbird: Lena Machado” tonight at the Hawai‘i Theatre at 8PM. The Honolulu Advertiser features an article written by her granddaughters, and the Star-Bulletin’s John Berger includes more coverage of Holunape themselves, their motivation for doing such a special show, as well as background information on Lena.

When I was doing the research for my M.A. thesis, I actually considered including Lena and Aunty Alice Nāmakelua, however, I could only find one thirty-second or so clip of her speaking in Hawaiian to compare with her sung Hawaiian; it was a brief telephone conversation she had with Larry Kimura on the old Ka Leo Hawai‘i radio program. In the end I found so many recordings of Almeida, both speaking and singing, that I focused on his music alone.

Hawaiian Music "River Of News"

I’ve been playing around with the idea of an aggregator for Hawaiian music news feeds. What it does is gather new from the RSS feeds of various blogs and combines them into a reverse-chronological list of posts by the authors of these feeds. This sample shows what the aggregator has compiled from my own MySpace blog and the MySpace blogs of Bryan Tolentino, Kenneth Makuakāne, Steven Espaniola and Henry Kapono. If you have a blog with an RSS feed and would like to have it added to the aggregator send me the URL of your blog. It doesn’t have to be a MySpace blog, it can be any kind of blog as long as it has an RSS feed. If you don’t know if your blog has one, just point me to the blog and I’ll try to figure it out.

I need to acknowledge, again, Dave Winer who has been championing this “river of news” concept for a long time. I haven’t been totally sold on the concept for my own feed consumption, but do see it’s value in this kind of context.

Online Music Sales Double

It’s one of those “good news, bad news” situations. Online music sales have doubled, but they fail to make up for the steep decline in physical CD sales.

Hawai‘i Music Awards Voting Begins

Online voting for the Hawai‘i Music Awards began late last night after a few technical glitches were worked out. Remember, all fans of Hawaiian and Hawai‘i-released music can vote, so get out there and support your favorites. Just click on the “Hawai‘i Music Awards” graphic at the top of the right hand column on this page. Of course, I would be grateful if you’d consider voting for Makuakāne in the Traditional Hawaiian category. Kenneth’s release was mistakenly placed in the Contemporary Hawaiian category when the HMA site first went online, and JKai quickly fixed it.
