Scary Hours

My apologies for Nahenahe.net being down for most of the day. I was very concerned that the site was broken beyond repair, but a bit of research on the web led to the cure. For the geeks among you: the MySQL database that stores all of the data in WordPress (the blogging software that runs Nahenahe.net) was corrupted and needed to be repaired. It took a while to figure out how to do that, but I was happy to see the site come to life again within a few seconds after repairing the databases.

It’s a Nahenahe.net tradition – I have started some polls for the 2007 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards. Remember that this is for fun only and that only HARA members can vote for the actual awards. I’ve added a few of the major ones in the column to the right for easy access and will add more this weekend.

Nā Hōkū Hanohano Final Ballot Mini-Controversy

It’s not unusual for me to receive emails from HARA members around this time of year (as well as emails from the general public), with questions about what may appear to be irregularities in the ballots for the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards. A few years ago ears were perked when the duo of Amy Gilliom and Willie K. appeared in the Female Vocalist category and not in the Group category, and more recently when Kalapana was entered in the Rock category. This year there seems to be a small uproar caused by the appearance of Catchafire, a New Zealand-based band, in the Reggae category. Their entry into this category is clearly in accordance with the rules.

Hawai‘i residency is required in the General Categories (Anthology, Song, Compilation, Most Promising Artist, Group, Male Vocalist, Female Vocalist, and Album), in the Technical Categories (Graphics, Liner Notes and Engineering) as well as the Adjudicated Categories (Haku Mele & Hawaiian Language Peformances). Hawai‘i residency is not required in the Genre Categories (Christmas Album, Comedy Album, Contemporary Album, Contemporary Hawaiian Album, Hawaiian Album, Instrumental Album, Jazz Album, Reggae Album and Rock Album) as long as the release “is distributed by a Hawai‘i distributor intended for wide distribution in the state,” and Catchafire’s release does indeed meet those criteria, like it or not.

While some may disagree with this and consider it a loophole, it is not. This is how some Hawaiian recordings and recordings by mainland Hawaiians and others have been entered, including recent releases by Mark Keali‘i Ho‘omalu and Steven Espaniola. There has been some clamor over the past few years by Hawaiians living on the US mainland to loosen the restrictions on Hawai‘i residency in the General, Technical and Adjudicated categories, but I don’t see that happening.

So for those interested, there is your clarification. I have a copy of the eligibility document and see if I can get it posted her for all to see.

2007 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Final Ballot

I have posted the final ballot for the 2007 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards. Congratuations to all finalists.

Please join us at the Hawai‘i Convention Center for the 2007 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, with its theme ‘Ālohilohi Ka Lei Hōkū. You can download the ticket order form from the HARA website. Corporate sponsorships are also available; see the form for detail.

Some random thoughts: the ballot looks pretty balanced, I don’t see any single release sweeping a substantial amount of awards this year, but who knows. I was thrilled that Kenneth got three nominations for Makuakāne, for Hawaiian Album of the Year, and he and I were co-nominated in the Haku Mele category for “He Nani Moloka‘i” and in “Engineering.” Mahalo to everyone who supported us!

I also found out that one of my compositions, “Nā Hōkū Pio ‘Ole”, was selected as the theme song for the 30th anniversary awards. Kainani Kahaunaele recorded it and it will be heard during the commercial intro and outros during the show. Mahalo nui to the selection committee. What a year!

Pacific Northwest Chapter Snafu Rectified, Sort Of

From the PNW Chapter office:

“The Governor Election ballots were inadvertently sent via bulk mail postage which caused some of our Members to receive the ballot 3 days before the due date.

In order to ensure that all of our members have a chance to vote for this important position, we are going to re-do the election. Please note: The replacement ballot must be used if the old ballot is submitted your vote will not be tabulated.

The replacement ballot will be mailed early next week via First Class postage and is due on Monday, June 13.”

Three days before the due date? I checked my mailbox yesterday and still have not received my ballot, four days after the due date!

Pacific Northwest Chapter Woes

I got an email from a fellow Hawai‘i member of the Pacific Northwest Chapter of NARAS that he received his ballot for Board elections last Saturday. Problem is that the deadline for ballots to be received was last Friday. I still haven’t received my ballot, and I checked my mailbox this morning. Are there any other Hawai’i members of the PNW Chapter, and can you email me (use the contact form in the right hand column) and let me know if you did or did not receive your ballot. I just received an email from the office saying, essentially, “sorry, but weʻre already counting the ballots.”

Just as upsetting is the fact that I wasnʻt notified of upcoming board elections either, and apparently I wasnʻt the only one who wasnʻt notified. Iʻm miffed, and considering transferring my membership to the LA chapter.

I contacted our two Hawai’i board members nearly six months ago regarding NARAS promise to have a Hawaiian language speaker on the Hawaiian category selection committee, and still have not heard back from either of them.

I thought that having more Hawaiʻi members in the PNW Chapter might increase our clout. The LA chapter members I talk to are much happier with their board and chapter office, so I guess Iʻll make the move myself.
