Slack Key Symposium II at Windward CC

On Saturday, June 16th, the Paliku Theatre at Windward Community College will play host to the Slack Key Symposium II, a free event which features Cyril Pahinui, Dennis Kamakahi and Ozzie Kotani along with legendary musician and composer Haunani Apoliona. These renowned artists will discuss slack key from the insider’s perspective and perform this uniquely local form of guitar, which has increasingly attracted worldwide interest.

The symposium begins at 2 p.m. and is scheduled to last about two hours. It will be moderated by UH Ethnomusicology professor Ricardo D. Trimillos. In the lobby, before and after the events on stage, Windward Community College’s own slack key teacher Ron Loo and a select group of his students will provide additional music. This is a wonderful program for anyone who is interested in learning more about slack key from musicians who have devoted their lives to learning and sharing the tradition.

MusicTech Hawai‘i: A Better Music Industry Through Technology

Although the industry may bemoan declining CD sales, the truth is that there has never been a better time to be a musician. The Internet is rewriting the book on marketing and distribution, and even better, the latest CRB decision ensures musicians get paid every time their music is played online*. Come hear a panel of music and technology experts discuss the new opportunities, and how Hawaiian musicians can make best use of them.

Panelists Include:
Kevin Arnold, CEO, Independent Online Distribution Alliance
Tom DeSavia, Senior VP, Membership Group ASCAP
Steve Mack, CEO Lux Media, PNW Chapter President
Neeta Ragoowansi, Director of Artist-Label Relations, Sound Exchange

Schedule:
12:00-12:30 pm – Registration
12:30-2:30 pm – Panel
2:30 – 4:00 pm – Networking Reception

To be held 6/30/2007 at The Outrigger Hotel, Leahi I & II, 2335 Kalakaua Avenue, Honolulu, Hawaii, 96815. Recording Academy Members Free + 1 guest, General Public $20. To RSVP or purchase tickets, please contact the PNW Chapter office by calling 206.834-1000 or email PacificNW@Grammy.com

* – this line is from the PR for the event, and is BS. The CRB decision tries to assure that labels get paid every time music is played online. Whether or not musicians will ever see a cent of it is debatable. What is certain that unless Congress grants a reprieve, less music and fewer musicians will be heard on the ‘net.

Does Podcasting Work?

It’s very gratifying to come across examples of how podcasting does help introduce people to music they might not hear through any other media. I came across this quote on CD Universe:

“I stumbled accross this CD after hearing one of the songs on nahenahe.net podcast and I had to buy it! With this instrumental album Troy Fernandez makes the ukulele a legitimate instument. His stunning technique and interesting songs will make any lover of instrumental guitar music appreciate this album.”

Running across this kinds of comment does make it tough to discontinue the podcast.

NahenaheNet Hawaiian Music Podcast #54

Back in February or so I announced that I would be discontinuing the Nahenahe.net podcast, and do perhaps one more. Its taken so long that I decided to do at least a few more, shorter podcasts (to match my attention span) before I officially end them. This is the first, it contains a song from Hōkū Zuttermeister and a remix I did of a song from Kenneth Makaukāne’s CD, Makuakāne. Also note that you can now simply listen to the podcast from this page without subscribing to the blog feed, simply click on the player at the bottom of this post.

Blogging For Fun and Fans

While many Hawai‘i musicians have MySpace sites these days, very few of them use the blogging functionality very often, and I wish more did. Kenneth is starting to get the hang of it on his own website, Glenn Medeiros has been doing it for a while and Natalie Ai Kamau‘u is getting into it as well. Nice to see.
