The News In Review

Aloha, I don’t have time to do a lot of posts, so will do a few short ones:

Natalie Ai Kamau’u and Auntie Genoa Keawe offer the final performances of The Waikiki Aquarium’s popular Ke Kani O Ke Kai summer concert series on Tuesday, August 7. The evening concert o the Aquarium lawn will also feature food from Hula Grill Waikiki.

Kenneth Makuakāne was interviewed by Lisa Malakaua for a feature in the Big Island weekly, and I got a little love, too. ;-) Kenneth will be performing at the visitor’s center in Kīlauea tomorrow for those on Hawai‘i island.

John Berger reviews the debut by Hawai‘i expatriot Faith Ako, who was produced by my old buddy Tarvin Mākia on Maui. They were classmates back in… I don’t think either would want me to say.

The Barefoot Natives will be on the Big Island in September:

  • Friday September 7 in Hilo, 7:30 pm at the Palace Theater. Tickets are a reasonable $30 Advance, $35 day of show and available through the Palace Theater Box office 934-7010 (m-f 10-3 pm).
  • Saturday September 8 in Kamuela, 7:30 pm at the Kahilu Theater. Tickets are also $30 Advance, $35 day of show and available through the Kahilu Theater Box office 885-6868.

No Nahenahe Shutdown, Just A Slowdown As Moving Day Draws Near

I haven’t posted in a few weeks now, and some people have emailed and asked if I’ve been the process of shutting down Nahenahe.net with our impending move to Ireland. I won’t be shutting down the site while we are there (Sept. through June) but updates will obviously not be as frequent on the site. Updates will probably begin to taper off as we prepare for the move, but I will try to post on major news and releases up until September. From that point on coverage will be spotty at best.

One recent major development I have been following has been ongoing discussions between SoundExchange and DiMA (which represents webcasters) regarding fees and royalties. Today was to have been the day that new royalty rates and fees went into effect that would have taken most webcasters off the web, and has already done so. There have been developments and ongoing negotiations, but mixed signals from both sides regarding an agreement. If you are interested in this topic, which does affect Hawaiian music, you can follow the discussion and recent developments on Wired’s Listening Post blog.

Nā Mele Moves To Monday

In a surprising move (to me at least) PBS Hawaii’s most popular local program, “Nā Mele: Traditions in Hawaiian Song,” featuring beloved Hawai’i musical artists, is moving from Thursday to Monday evenings at 7:30 p.m. Tonight’s “Nā Mele” features Darlene Ahuna and the late Kawai Cockett. Now that’s “Must See TV.”
