Wanna Get On My Calendar?

You may have noticed there is now a concert calendar on Nahenahe, in the right hand column below the polls. This is done using Upcoming. If you want to get your gig listed, simply create an account on Upcoming, post your gig there, and then contact me on Upcoming (my user id is “keoladonaghy”), and I’ll add your gig to my Upcoming calendar. Though I’ve added a few events in there myself, I won’t do it for everyone. Enter you gig there and let me know about it. Web 2.0 at its finest!

Gypsy Pacific With Willie Nelson

One of Hawai‘i’s best kept musical secrets is the band Gypsy Pacific on Maui, and guitarist Tom Conway one of the finest in the state. They recently did a gig with country legend Willie Nelson on Maui. Pics from that gig can be found on Tom’s MySpace page, as well as a song they did with Willie entitled “Peaceful Solution.”

New Poll: Non-Hawai‘i Resident Eligibility For Nā Hōkū Hanohano

I created a new poll (visible in the right hand column) which asks the question: How should releases by non-Hawai’i residents be eligible for the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, if at all? Last year, a New Zealand reggae band, Katchafire, was entered in the reggae category, and it stirred up some controvery, particularly among Hawai‘i-based reggae acts. As I explained at the time, this was within the rules, non-Hawai’i acts which have local distribution are eligible for the awards, and Katchafire was distributed within the state by a Hawai‘i distributor.

I have had numerous conversations with artists, fans and my colleagues on the HARA Board of Governors. What is easy for all of us to forget is that HARA represents the entire Hawai‘i recording industry – artists, engineers, producers, graphic artists, labels and distributors as well. Distributors are among those being severely hurt be the downturn in CD sales. By allowing non-Hawai‘i acts gain elibility through local distribution, it helps those distributors. What also needs to be clear that this eligibility only extends to the genre categories (reggae, Hawaiian, rock, pop, Island Music, jazz, etc.) and not to the technical (liner notes, engineering, graphics), personality (male vocalist, female vocalist, group) nor adjudicated (haku mele, Hawaiian performance) categories. So while Katchafire was eligible in the reggae category, they could not be entered in the Group of the Year category. Likewise, Steven Espaniola (a California resident born in Hawai‘i) was eligible for and entered his release in the Hawaiian category, but could not in Male Vocalist. One idea I brought up was to have entries only eligible in the two genre categories that feature music with strong roots in Hawai‘i – Hawaiian (obviously) and Island Music.

So, please keep this in mind when you cast your vote in the poll, and if you feel so included, leave a comment to this message.

Keali‘i Reichel Featured on iPod Commercial!

Nah, not really. But some eagle-eyed Hawaiian music fans have noticed that if you look really closely at this TV ad, you’ll see the user type “k-e-a” while searching for a song, and Keali‘i’s name briefly appears.

E Kōkua I Ka Papa Makahiki 2009

The Class of 2009 of Ke Kula ‘O Nāwahīokalani‘ōpu‘u (my daughter’s class) is engaged in some fund-raising projects to pay for their class’ activities, leading up to their graduation ceremonies in spring 2009. I’ve set up an Amazon.com AStore for the class to help them. If you purchase anything at Amazon.com, I’d like to ask your kokua by first visting their site, begin your search for products from their page, and they will earn a small commission from the sale. It doesn’t cost you any more to go this route. They are working on a class blog to keep family and friends abreast of their activites, and I will point to it when they are ready.

Review of Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame: "Nā Lani ‘Ehā"

Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame: “Nā Lani ‘Ehā”
Produced by the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame, “Nā Lani ‘Ehā” is a fitting tribute to the four royal siblings who were also among Hawai‘i’s most gifted musical composers. It is one of the most important historical projects ever undertaken.

King David Kalākaua, Queen Lili‘uokalani, Princess Likelike and Prince Leleiohōkū were not only royal sibling that comprised Hawai‘i’s last monarchy until its overthrow in 1893 – they were also among Hawai‘i’s most gifted and prolific composers. Their skill with Hawaiian poetry was enhanced by their formal western musical training, and sets a standard that contemporary composers strive to achieve. The Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame selected an even dozen compositions by these royals, all of them well known standards of the Hawaiian music canon.

All songs feature lead vocals by the incomparable Ku‘uipo Kumukahi, and her vocal performances would no doubt have been lauded by the composers themselves. She is accompanied by Dr. Isaac Akuna on harmony vocals, ‘ukulele, kīkā kī hō‘alu, electric and acoustic steel guitar and upright bass. James Kimo Stone and Joe Winchester add additional harmony vocals and Steve Kramer performs on keyboards.

It is impossible to pick out any song or performance above any others; the CD is uniformly excellent from beginning to end. If you are unfamiliar with the musical works of Hawai‘i’s royalty, this should be the first release you should buy. It is one of the most important historical projects ever undertaken.

Review of Jeff Peterson: "Pure Slack Key"

Jeff Peterson: “Pure Slack Key”
“Pure Slack Key” is Jeff Peterson’s sixth release. While not groundbreaking, it successfully negotiates that delicate line between innovation and maintaining the most identifiable elements of the slack key tradition.

Jeff Peterson was one of the guitarists featured on “Slack Key Guitar, Vol. 2″, which was awarded the first-ever Grammy award for Hawaiian Album of the Year. Peterson was raised on the slopes of Haleakalā on the island of Maui, and was exposed to the paniolo (cowboy) traditions, including kīkā kī hō‘alu, Hawaiian slack key guitar.

“Pure Slack Key” is Peterson’s sixth release, and includes 14 tracks, some well known Hawaiian standards suck as ‘Ulili Ē, Wai’alae, Ku‘u Lei ‘Awapuhi, and Kaimana Hila, more recent compositions such as Dennis Kamakahi’s Koke‘e, Keali‘i Reichel’s Ka Nohona Pili Kai, as well as a number of original compositions.

His chops are put to the test by Punahoa Slack Key, and while the arrangement does not extend beyond what we have heard from Ledward Ka‘apana on many occasions, Jeff’s personal touch can clearly be heard in the performance.

The liner notes are brief, with a short bio of Peterson, a single paragraph on the history of kīkā kī hō‘alu, and a list of artists with whom he has studied or performed. Sadly, the release lacks any information on his tunings or other background on the songs. While a link is provided to his website, no additional information is found there either.

Peterson’s strengths are clearly his technique and skill as an arranger. He possesses prodigious technique, derived not only from his slack key experience but benefits from his classical and jazz training as well. The arrangements show the depth and breadth of his musical experience, and exceed those of many younger performers coming up in the genre. While not groundbreaking in any way “Pure Slack Key” successfully navigates that delicate line between innovation and maintaining the most identifiable elements of the slack key tradition.

HARA Wants YOU!

The Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts held its annual general membership meeting this past Monday at Willows in Honolulu. About 45 members, including all of the members of the Board of Governors, were in attendence. I filed a summary of the activities here:

http://mauicast.net/nahenahe/?p=2613

Discussion was lively and all left very invigorated and inspired by the possibilities the future brings. We would like to invite members of the recording industry and the general public to join the organization. Details regarding the various types of membership can be found here:

http://nahokuhanohano.org/eligibilty.html

If you have been a HARA member in the past and felt that you were not served well by the organization, or if you have never joined for any reason, this would be a great time to do so. The board has several new faces, and we have a number of younger performers who are joining various committees and becoming active. It is a very exciting time for us, and I’m happy and proud to be on the board and supporting our recording industry and performers. Feel free to contact me personally if you have any questions, or reply to this message if you like.

Report From HARA General Membership Meeting

The Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts held its general membership meeting today at Willows Restaurant in Honolulu. About 45 members showed up, including all of the 11 board members. The 2007-2008 Board of Governors is comprised of Governors Hailama Farden (President), Ku‘uipo Kumukahi (Vice President), Lea Uehara (Secretary), Alan Yoshioka (Treasurer), Gaylord Holomālia, Kenneth Makuakāne, Skylark Rosetti, John Aeto, Keola Donaghy, Pali Ka‘aihue and Tim Mathre. Kimo Alama Keaulana was voted onto the board, however, withdrew due to his heavy work schedule, and the board voted to appoint Tim Mathre to fill his term.

Hailama Farden offered updates on our membership drive, and I was happy to hear that HARA membership is up to about 650 – quite a bit higher than I had last heard a few years ago. He reminded all about the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award release deadline (December 31, 2007), the various member services available through the HARA office (postcard & CD mailings as well as email blasts), and updated everyone on the progress on the HARA website. Also present was Immediate Past President Marlene Sai, who offered a comprehensive review of the past year’s activities.

There was a lively give-and-take between the members present and the governors, most of which involved discussion of ways for the industry to address the challenges that the industry faces. One that was brought up on several occasions was the need to get the younger generation of Hawai‘i musicians involved in HARA. Mailani Makainai and Paula Fuga were the only younger performers present; both actively participated in the discussion and offered their perspectives on how HARA can move forward. I hope that both run again for the HARA Board of Governors in the future because they are both the kind of people we need to get involved and help address the challenges that the recording industry faces.

I announced that the Board of Bovernors had created an ad-hoc committee to look into the issue of digital distribution, and how HARA needs to accommodate artists who release recordings as digital downloads only – how such artists can qualify for membership in HARA and how their releases will qualify for the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards. I’m joined on the committee by fellow Governors Kenneth Makuakāne and Pali Ka‘aihue, as well as Mailani Makainai. We are soliciting feedback from all members who have thoughts on how we can address digital distribution and its place in our industry and awards ceremony. Please use the contact form linked in the left hand column of this page and let me know what you think. I’ll pass this on to my fellow committee members so we can make recommendations to the Board of Governors.

All in all it was an excellent gathering. I wish more artists would show up for these events. HARA is more than just the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, but it seems that in some people’s minds that’s all that it is about. Sad.
