I saw and pointed to this earlier in the year, but it came into my stream of consciousness again and is worth watching and pondering once again. Kudos to Adam Curry.

“Pihana is the debut release of kumu hula Nāpua Grieg. It features a balance of Hawaiian standards and new compositions, and her voice effortlessly moves between the two. An impressive debut.“

Nāpua Greig is kumu hula of Hālau Nā Lei Kaumaka O Uka from the island of Maui. Her debut recording, Pihana, was released in August, and showcases her vocal versatility in a number of settings. She effortlessly shifts between a vocal “aunty mode” with strong and controlled vibrato on such standards as “None Hula” (where she is joined by Maui’s Hulu Lindsey), and “Ho‘ohaehae”, to a more youthful and contemporary sound with “Lawakua” and “Nani Ohala.” She is joined by Weldon Kekauoha (vocals) and the masterful Aaron Sala (piano) on the hapa Haole standard “Blue Lei”.
The liner notes include both Hawaiian lyrics and English translations, but sadly do not credit the composers of the traditional songs contained within, such as John Kameaaloha Almeida for “Lovely Sunrise Haleakalā” and Lena Machado for “None Hula”. Mānaiakalani Kalua and Kīhei Nahale-a are properly credited for their new compositions. Pihana is an impressive debut that should at the very least claim a few Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards nominations and perhaps some wins as well at next year’s awards.

In a proactive move intended to deal with issues involving digital download-only releases, the HARA Board of Governors formed an Ad Hoc Committee on Digital Media at the Board’s October 2007 meeting, and I was selected its chair. The committee’s primary responsibilities were to make recommendations on how digital download-only releases may qualify for entry in the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, and how artists who release their music through this new medium may qualify for the membership. The committee made the following recommendations to the Board of Governors at its December meeting:
- That Hawai‘i-resident artists, producers and other professionals who have least one verifiable recording credit on a digital download-only release which is available for sale exclusively through established online retailers such as iTunes, Rhapsody, Amazon.com, eMusic and CD Baby be made eligible for regular membership.
- That digital-download only releases which are created, produced, engineered, and recorded by a Hawai‘i resident artist(s), musician(s), or technician(s) and are available exclusively through established online retailers be made eligible for inclusion on the preliminary ballot provided that they are available for sale on at least one of these retailers by December 31 of the eligibility year.
- That digital download-only releases by non-residents which are available exclusively through established online retailers be made eligible for inclusion on the preliminary ballot in the genre categories, provided that a Hawai‘i-based company arranged for digital distribution of the release, or it is available on an established Hawai‘i-based retail service.
- That the only technical category in which digital-download only releases should be made eligible is Engineering, provided that 3 audio CDs of the release are submitted for consideration. The committee recommended that digital download-only releases not be eligible in the Graphics and Liner Notes categories at this time.
- That all releases, whether on physical media or as digital download-only, must contain a minimum of nine (9) tracks and a minimum overall play length of 35 minutes to qualify as an album or DVD, or for artists, producers and other contributors to qualify for any of the general, genre, technical or adjudicated categories.
The Board of Governors voted to adopt all of these recommendations, which will become effective on January 1, 2008, so any digital download-only recording which is released in the 2008 calendar year will be eligible for the 2009 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards. Mahalo to Governors Kenneth Makuakāne, Pali Ka‘aihue and HARA members Mailani Makainai and Darin Leong who worked with me on addressing these issues.

The Recording Academy has, over the past 4 years, endeavored to provide a way for Academy voting members to digitally access nominated music during the final voting period. This year, a password-protected member area has been created on iTunes where full streams of nominated music will be available in those categories where master rights and publishing rights for all nominated recordings have been cleared. This area will be accessible by all Academy members in North America, and this application will work across both windows and Mac platforms.
The iTunes listening area will be available to members beginning Friday, December 14, at 5:00 AM Pacific Standard Time/8:00 AM Eastern Standard Time and will remain available during the balloting period. Academy members should have received an email from the office with explicit instructions for accessing this area. If you are an Academy member and have not received such an email, you should contact the chapter of which you are a member ASAP.

“Amy Hānaiali‘i shares many of the songs that were part of her childhood on Maui. Her stellar vocals backed with impeccable musicianship that produced the year’s best new holiday release.“

Amy Hānaiali‘i is a two-time Grammy nominated vocalist who also dominated the 2007 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards with her release “Generation Hawai‘i”. It did not take her long to follow that up with a wonderful collection of Hawaiian Christmas standards (and a few in English as well) on
A Hawaiian Christmas
. The Hawaiian selections are predominantly Hawaiian translations of Christmas standards, such as “Hāmau E Nā Kānaka” (Hark The Herald Angels Sing), “Pō La‘i Ē” (Silent Night), “Pōmaika‘i Wale Ko Ke Ao” (Joy To the World) and “Pō Hemolele” (Silent Night). R. Alex Anderson’s Hawaiian Christmas classic “Mele Kalikimaka” and English standards such as “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas”, “Little Drummer Boy” and “White Christmas” provide some linguistic variety, but even those who do not understand Hawaiian will appreciate the standards done in ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i. The closing “Ave Maria” is spine-tinging.Chino Montero, Jeff Peterson, Steve Jones and Bobby Ingano provide outstanding accompaniment which allows Amy’s vocals to shine. If you buy any new Christmas release this year, this is definitely the one to get.
