Amazon MP3 Sales To Go International

“…Amazon announced earlier today that their Amazon MP3 store will become internationally available starting this year, dealing making the Seattle-based company even more of a contender against Apple’s iTunes.”

Listen up, boys and girls. If you are only selling your music in iTunes and maybe some of the lesser ones like Rhapsody and AOL Music, you should pay close attention to Amazon MP3. It will take a while but it could be the one to knock iTunes off its perch. If you are still not distributed digitally or looking into digital distribution of your music, you might as well not be in the music industry. It’s more work for less money, but that’s the reality of it right now.

Hawai‘i Music Awards Voting Open

The ballot box is open at the Hawai‘i Music Awards website, and will remain open until February 4, 2008. I only found about 12 categories to vote in out of the plethora there. The most difficult to chose was in the Traditional Hawaiian category – several deserving releases were there. Let the ballot stuffing, er, voting begin!

P.S. “The Best New Artist Of The Year” poll for the Hawai‘i Music Awards is being conducted on the Aloha Joe website.

HARA Membership and Nā Hōkū Hanohano Entry Deadline Approaching

This is a reminder to all HARA members whose memberships have expired to renew your membership as soon as possible. Expired memberships must be renewed and new membership applications received by January 31 February 15, 2008 in order for you to receive the preliminary ballot for the 2008 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards. The Membership Renewal form is available for download from the HARA website, or you can call Bryson at the office – (808) 593-9424.

Starting January 1, 2008 the bi-annual membership dues increased from $60 to $90. The dues have not been raised in a very long time and the cost of maintaining an office, staff and other monthly expenses such as telephone, website, newsletter costs, etc. has made it imperative for us to do so, in order to keep our doors open.

The deadline for submitting your recordings for the preliminary ballot for the 2008 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards is also January 31, 2008. All recordings created, produced, engineered, and recorded by a Hawai‘i resident artist(s), musician(s), or technician(s) released during the eligibility year and primarily for distribution in Hawai‘i are eligible for inclusion on the preliminary voting ballot. Recordings released between January 1 and December 31, 2007 are eligible to be entered for the 2008 Awards. You can download the Nomination Form and Guide for the Awards from the HARA website

Please read the Nomination Guide and fill out the Nomination Form carefully, and submit the required number of CDs and additional documentation, if required. A full HARA newsletter with this and other news should be emailed to members by the end of the week.

Frank Delima UH Warrior Tribute Trilogy

Frank Delima hasrecorded “What June Jones, You Going Leave Us Now?” to the tune of one of his classics, Lucille. This song, along with “Hawai`i, We Did It” and “Hawai`i Marches On,” is not offered on his latest CD, but you can download the UH Warrior Tribute Trilogy for free from his website. However, if you would like to make a donation to the Frank De Lima Student Enrichment Program, your generosity would be greatly appreciated.

Keola Beamer's Grammy Withdrawl

About two weeks before our family left for Aotearoa, I received a call from Keola Beamer. During that conversation he informed me of his decision not to participate in the Grammy process and not support his own nomination in the Best Hawaiian Music Album category. As he explained his reasons to me I could not help but be filled with pride for my dear friend, his courage, honesty and integrity. We were boarding a plane for Auckland when the stories were published, and I chose not to try to scoop the printed articles, but wait until we got settled in to link to them and discuss this development.

When you consider his body of work, I don’t believe there is a single living artist more deserving of being awarded a Grammy for Hawaiian music than Keola, however, I also realize that it is not a lifetime achievement award either. If the Hawaiian Grammy had been established in the 1970s, he would probably have eight to ten on his shelves right now. However, Ka Hikina O Ka Hau, by his own admission, is not a Hawaiian music release. And while he is far too diplomatic to “rain on someone else’s parade” (as he put it to me), he is clearly not happy with the current Grammy process either. The fourth Hawaiian Grammy will be awarded in about a month, and I am prepared to be disappointed yet again. I truly hope that KB does put out a release which deservse to be in this category, and have little doubt that he would stand as good a chance as anyone to win it.

Cyril Pahinui To Teach Slack Key at UH-Hilo

Cyril Pahinui will teaching a pair of courses through the University of Hawaii at Hilo College of Continuing Education and Community Service (CCECS).

The first course covers the basics of kī hō‘alu, or slack key guitar. Students will learn several traditional tunings, focusing on those taught to Pahinui and his brothers by their legendary father, the late, great “Pops” Gabby Pahinui, as well as musical methods to start playing music. Students must bring their own guitars.

The second course is Hawaiian music appreciation. Pahinui will share his knowledge of the history and tradition of Hawaiian music and slack key guitar, featuring the songs of the Pahinui family. Students will also learn the themes, stories and kaona (metaphoric subtext) behind the music, as well as insights on the composers.
