On Saturday, June 16th, the Paliku Theatre at Windward Community College will play host to the Slack Key Symposium II, a free event which features Cyril Pahinui, Dennis Kamakahi and Ozzie Kotani along with legendary musician and composer Haunani Apoliona. These renowned artists will discuss slack key from the insider’s perspective and perform this uniquely local form of guitar, which has increasingly attracted worldwide interest.
The symposium begins at 2 p.m. and is scheduled to last about two hours. It will be moderated by UH Ethnomusicology professor Ricardo D. Trimillos. In the lobby, before and after the events on stage, Windward Community College’s own slack key teacher Ron Loo and a select group of his students will provide additional music. This is a wonderful program for anyone who is interested in learning more about slack key from musicians who have devoted their lives to learning and sharing the tradition.
