Controversy Brewing?

John Berger of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin discusses the dominance of new artists and Hawaiian music artists in this years awards, and notes a ‘there’s some backstage controversy brewing’. First, my congratulations to all nominees.

The controversy that John refers to is ‘the decision of the HARA Board of Governors to define “The Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame Presents — Na Lani ‘Eha,” an album recorded by board member Ku’uipo Kumukahi and the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame Serenaders, as the work of a female vocalist rather than a group because the other members of the quartet play instruments and sing backing vocals.’

Disclaimer: I am replying to this issue on my own behalf and am not speaking on behalf of my colleagues on the HARA board.

While I was not a member of the selection committee for the awards this year, I was on the periphery of the discussion regarding this entry and some others that were tough calls. For some historical context, this same kind of ‘controversy’ erupted a few years ago as well, when Amy Hānaiali‘i Gilliom was nominated as “Female Vocalist” for the CD release “Amy & Willie”, and they were not entered in the Group category. Some critics, myself included, believed this was a circumvention of the rules in an effort to keep label-mates A&W and Nā Leo from competing with each other in the “Group” category. Here is the wording of the criteria for the Female Vocalist category:

“Best performance by a vocal duo or group of newly recorded material.”

Please note the “vocal” part. Amy was the featured vocalist on all cuts on her collaboration with Willie, though he did provide backup vocals if my memory serves. One could argue that they are still a vocal duo, but an interpretation needed to be made, and the selection committee in that year made a tough decision which bothered a lot of people. While it definitely did not break any rules their interpretation led to a lot of second-guessing.

On the “Nā Lani ‘Ehā” recording, Ku‘uipo is undeniably the featured vocalist, and the Hall of Fame Serenaders providing backup vocal and instrumental support. Perhaps it is their being credited on the cover that bothers John. If they had been entered as a group there likely would not be any controversy, but how do you define a group? If Ku‘uipo’s name alone appeared on the cover, would he be objecting? To that I ask this: If Keali‘i Reichel’s backup singers and musicians took a name, and he chose to credit them on the cover to give them some recognition, would that preclude him from entering as “Male Vocalist of the Year”? What is more important – the performance or the CD title in determining which category the release should be entered?

I will say this – it is my firm belief than any appearance of a conflict of interest is a conflict of interest, and the fact that Ipo is a member of the HARA board only provides HARA critics with ammunition. I can tell you that there was no favortism granted to her, at least on my part, because of her status with the board. If anything I was more critical because of my desire that everything the board does be beyond reproach. In the end, because a precedent had been set and her entry into the Female vocalist category not a clear violation of the entry rules, I supported it.

This could have been avoided if the rules were written more clearly and in more detail. The less interpretation needs to be done regarding entries the better, as far as I’m concerned. This is something that the board will be taking up this summer, and we have a long list of issues that need to be address regarding a number of categories. I will report the details of those discussion, and make sure that the changes are clearly articulated to the membership.

Updates From The Southern Hemisphere

I tend not to get too much into personal things here on Nahenahe, but I have received a lot of email recently from folks since real posts have been few and far between, mostly just my del.icio.us links to stories elsewhere on the web. We’ve been in Dunedin, Aotearoa (New Zealand) for nearly two and a half months now. The weather has been spectacular, very Hilo-like with much less rain. Folks here by and large credit us for what we have been told has been the best summer in Dunedin in 20 years. Temperatures tend to be in the 60s-70s during the day but occasionally drip down to the 50s and even 40s at night. It will get considerably colder in the coming months. The family is doing great and we’ve all pretty much settled into a routine here. Mālia is at Logan Park High School, which is walking distance from our flat. We have no car so walk everywhere, but markets, malls and everything we need is within walking distance. We have some pictures of our adventure up on my Flickr account.

The music department is conveniently located about 50 yards from our flat too (my Ph.d. program is ethnomusicology). My two supervisors, Drs. Henry Johnson and Dan Bendrups have been amazing. I’m making great progress on my Ph.d. topic; at least my Henry and Dan think so. I wish I could get into it here, but can’t give too much away at this point because it could possibly influence my research when I return to Hawai‘i (i.e., someone who reads this may turn out to be someone I will want to interview, and be influenced by what I write here). All I can say at this point is that it does involve issues regarding Hawaiian language in Hawaiian music.

It’s hard to believe that we’re nearly half-way into our adventure here. We’ll be back in Hawai‘i in late-June or early July, and look forward to seeing everyone then.

HARA UPDATES:

I have been heavily involved with HARA issues in my spare time. The preliminary ballots for Nā Hōkū Hanohano should be going out any day. We spent a LOT of time going through them, making sure all of the entries were in the correct categories, and weeding out the releases that should not have even been submitted at all. What is clear is that we on the board do need to take a look at the rules for many of the categories, and eligibility requirements for individuals – there is a need for greater clarity in the criteria. I’d like to give people the benefit of the doubt when they enter things in inappropriate categories, or enter themselves and their releases when they clearly should not even be eligible for entry. But sometimes it’s pretty easy to tell when some are being manipulative and deceitful. We will address all of these things in the future, but for now, the ballot will be going out after our best efforts to make sure that the rules have been followed by all. Mahalo to the board members, as well as HARA members who serve on the selection committee and help assure that all is proper with the process.

Oh, yes, there will be a newsletter forthcoming as well as a survey from the HARA office regarding health insurance. Please do fill that out and return it to the office when you get it.

HARA Membership and Nā Hōkū Hanohano Entry Deadline Approaching

This is a reminder to all HARA members whose memberships have expired to renew your membership as soon as possible. Expired memberships must be renewed and new membership applications received by January 31 February 15, 2008 in order for you to receive the preliminary ballot for the 2008 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards. The Membership Renewal form is available for download from the HARA website, or you can call Bryson at the office – (808) 593-9424.

Starting January 1, 2008 the bi-annual membership dues increased from $60 to $90. The dues have not been raised in a very long time and the cost of maintaining an office, staff and other monthly expenses such as telephone, website, newsletter costs, etc. has made it imperative for us to do so, in order to keep our doors open.

The deadline for submitting your recordings for the preliminary ballot for the 2008 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards is also January 31, 2008. All recordings created, produced, engineered, and recorded by a Hawai‘i resident artist(s), musician(s), or technician(s) released during the eligibility year and primarily for distribution in Hawai‘i are eligible for inclusion on the preliminary voting ballot. Recordings released between January 1 and December 31, 2007 are eligible to be entered for the 2008 Awards. You can download the Nomination Form and Guide for the Awards from the HARA website

Please read the Nomination Guide and fill out the Nomination Form carefully, and submit the required number of CDs and additional documentation, if required. A full HARA newsletter with this and other news should be emailed to members by the end of the week.

Digital Release Eligibility For HARA Membership and the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards

In a proactive move intended to deal with issues involving digital download-only releases, the HARA Board of Governors formed an Ad Hoc Committee on Digital Media at the Board’s October 2007 meeting, and I was selected its chair. The committee’s primary responsibilities were to make recommendations on how digital download-only releases may qualify for entry in the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, and how artists who release their music through this new medium may qualify for the membership. The committee made the following recommendations to the Board of Governors at its December meeting:

  1. That Hawai‘i-resident artists, producers and other professionals who have least one verifiable recording credit on a digital download-only release which is available for sale exclusively through established online retailers such as iTunes, Rhapsody, Amazon.com, eMusic and CD Baby be made eligible for regular membership.
  2. That digital-download only releases which are created, produced, engineered, and recorded by a Hawai‘i resident artist(s), musician(s), or technician(s) and are available exclusively through established online retailers be made eligible for inclusion on the preliminary ballot provided that they are available for sale on at least one of these retailers by December 31 of the eligibility year.
  3. That digital download-only releases by non-residents which are available exclusively through established online retailers be made eligible for inclusion on the preliminary ballot in the genre categories, provided that a Hawai‘i-based company arranged for digital distribution of the release, or it is available on an established Hawai‘i-based retail service.
  4. That the only technical category in which digital-download only releases should be made eligible is Engineering, provided that 3 audio CDs of the release are submitted for consideration. The committee recommended that digital download-only releases not be eligible in the Graphics and Liner Notes categories at this time.
  5. That all releases, whether on physical media or as digital download-only, must contain a minimum of nine (9) tracks and a minimum overall play length of 35 minutes to qualify as an album or DVD, or for artists, producers and other contributors to qualify for any of the general, genre, technical or adjudicated categories.

The Board of Governors voted to adopt all of these recommendations, which will become effective on January 1, 2008, so any digital download-only recording which is released in the 2008 calendar year will be eligible for the 2009 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards. Mahalo to Governors Kenneth Makuakāne, Pali Ka‘aihue and HARA members Mailani Makainai and Darin Leong who worked with me on addressing these issues.

New Poll: Non-Hawai‘i Resident Eligibility For Nā Hōkū Hanohano

I created a new poll (visible in the right hand column) which asks the question: How should releases by non-Hawai’i residents be eligible for the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, if at all? Last year, a New Zealand reggae band, Katchafire, was entered in the reggae category, and it stirred up some controvery, particularly among Hawai‘i-based reggae acts. As I explained at the time, this was within the rules, non-Hawai’i acts which have local distribution are eligible for the awards, and Katchafire was distributed within the state by a Hawai‘i distributor.

I have had numerous conversations with artists, fans and my colleagues on the HARA Board of Governors. What is easy for all of us to forget is that HARA represents the entire Hawai‘i recording industry – artists, engineers, producers, graphic artists, labels and distributors as well. Distributors are among those being severely hurt be the downturn in CD sales. By allowing non-Hawai‘i acts gain elibility through local distribution, it helps those distributors. What also needs to be clear that this eligibility only extends to the genre categories (reggae, Hawaiian, rock, pop, Island Music, jazz, etc.) and not to the technical (liner notes, engineering, graphics), personality (male vocalist, female vocalist, group) nor adjudicated (haku mele, Hawaiian performance) categories. So while Katchafire was eligible in the reggae category, they could not be entered in the Group of the Year category. Likewise, Steven Espaniola (a California resident born in Hawai‘i) was eligible for and entered his release in the Hawaiian category, but could not in Male Vocalist. One idea I brought up was to have entries only eligible in the two genre categories that feature music with strong roots in Hawai‘i – Hawaiian (obviously) and Island Music.

So, please keep this in mind when you cast your vote in the poll, and if you feel so included, leave a comment to this message.

HARA Wants YOU!

The Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts held its annual general membership meeting this past Monday at Willows in Honolulu. About 45 members, including all of the members of the Board of Governors, were in attendence. I filed a summary of the activities here:

http://mauicast.net/nahenahe/?p=2613

Discussion was lively and all left very invigorated and inspired by the possibilities the future brings. We would like to invite members of the recording industry and the general public to join the organization. Details regarding the various types of membership can be found here:

http://nahokuhanohano.org/eligibilty.html

If you have been a HARA member in the past and felt that you were not served well by the organization, or if you have never joined for any reason, this would be a great time to do so. The board has several new faces, and we have a number of younger performers who are joining various committees and becoming active. It is a very exciting time for us, and I’m happy and proud to be on the board and supporting our recording industry and performers. Feel free to contact me personally if you have any questions, or reply to this message if you like.

Report From HARA General Membership Meeting

The Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts held its general membership meeting today at Willows Restaurant in Honolulu. About 45 members showed up, including all of the 11 board members. The 2007-2008 Board of Governors is comprised of Governors Hailama Farden (President), Ku‘uipo Kumukahi (Vice President), Lea Uehara (Secretary), Alan Yoshioka (Treasurer), Gaylord Holomālia, Kenneth Makuakāne, Skylark Rosetti, John Aeto, Keola Donaghy, Pali Ka‘aihue and Tim Mathre. Kimo Alama Keaulana was voted onto the board, however, withdrew due to his heavy work schedule, and the board voted to appoint Tim Mathre to fill his term.

Hailama Farden offered updates on our membership drive, and I was happy to hear that HARA membership is up to about 650 – quite a bit higher than I had last heard a few years ago. He reminded all about the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award release deadline (December 31, 2007), the various member services available through the HARA office (postcard & CD mailings as well as email blasts), and updated everyone on the progress on the HARA website. Also present was Immediate Past President Marlene Sai, who offered a comprehensive review of the past year’s activities.

There was a lively give-and-take between the members present and the governors, most of which involved discussion of ways for the industry to address the challenges that the industry faces. One that was brought up on several occasions was the need to get the younger generation of Hawai‘i musicians involved in HARA. Mailani Makainai and Paula Fuga were the only younger performers present; both actively participated in the discussion and offered their perspectives on how HARA can move forward. I hope that both run again for the HARA Board of Governors in the future because they are both the kind of people we need to get involved and help address the challenges that the recording industry faces.

I announced that the Board of Bovernors had created an ad-hoc committee to look into the issue of digital distribution, and how HARA needs to accommodate artists who release recordings as digital downloads only – how such artists can qualify for membership in HARA and how their releases will qualify for the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards. I’m joined on the committee by fellow Governors Kenneth Makuakāne and Pali Ka‘aihue, as well as Mailani Makainai. We are soliciting feedback from all members who have thoughts on how we can address digital distribution and its place in our industry and awards ceremony. Please use the contact form linked in the left hand column of this page and let me know what you think. I’ll pass this on to my fellow committee members so we can make recommendations to the Board of Governors.

All in all it was an excellent gathering. I wish more artists would show up for these events. HARA is more than just the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, but it seems that in some people’s minds that’s all that it is about. Sad.

Still A Governor / General Membership Meeting Announcement

The new Board of Governors of the Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts met for the first time last evening in Honolulu, and I joined via video-conference from Hilo. I mentioned previously that I had offered to step aside if the board felt that my absence for the first six months of 2008 would hinder my ability to serve the HARA membership. I was strongly encouraged by several board members and some of the membership before the meeting to remain on the board and contribute in those areas which would not require my physical presence in Hawai‘i. After some discussion the board agreed and supported my desire to remain on the board. Mahalo to those of you who emailed and expressed your support.

This is a reminder, one of my last, about the HARA General Membership Meeting to be held Monday, November 12, 2007 (Veteran’s Day) at Willows Restaurant – 901 Hausten Street in Mo‘ili‘ili from 11:00 to 2:00 p.m. The $26.00 (includes tax and gratuity) entitles you to enjoy Willows renowned buffet. Call or email Bryson at the HARA office (808) 593–9424 or email bryson (at) nahokuhanohano.org. Deadline to register for the event is Sunday November 11, 2007

Agenda will include installation of new Board members and officers – come meet your new Board for the 2007–2008 term. We’ll have a review of the past year and a preview of the coming year’s events, plus your comments and suggestions on how we can make this a better organization for our members.

Mahalo Nui Loa!

Aloha kākou. I received a call from HARA president Marlene Sai informing me that I had been elected to the HARA Board of Governors. I am incredibly humbled and grateful to all HARA members that voted for me. It is quite an honor and a responsibility that I was looking forward to. Sadly, I informed Marlene that our family has decided to travel to Aotearoa (New Zealand) in January as I will begin Ph.d. studies in ethnomusicology at the University of Otago. Since we will be gone until late-June, Marlene and I agreed it would be best if I step aside and allow the board to select someone to serve in my place. The board needs to be active, and while I would have been happy to serve on the board remotely and participate as best I could via email, phone and video conferencing, it would perhaps be best if someone in Hawai‘i took the position.

I will likely run again in fall 2008, so would appreciate your support again at that time. I will still be attending the general membership meeting on November 12, and continue to support HARA’s work as best I can while away.

Update: After having some conversations with a few present and incoming members of the Board of Governors I may serve on the board after all. We’ll be discussing it next week at the new board’s first meeting. My offer to step aside still stands, but if the majority of the board wants me to serve the term I was elected to I’d happily do so. I’ll let you know when we’ve come to a decision.

New HARA Website

We (the HARA board and I) were pleasantly surprised to see the new HARA website go live the day of the awards show. Stacey Leong-Mills did the new site, and while some of the features are not yet turned on it looks great. It was a pleasure for me to help the board with the original website for the past 8 years or so, but I am glad they decided to “go pro” and hire Stacey to fully develop it.

10 Things I Was Thinking On The Flight Home

  1. I was thrilled for Kāwika Kahiapo, who won the Bankoh Slack Key Award, and also scored some major love with his group Kaukahi. Kāwika released one of my favorite Hawaiian albums of all time about 10 years ago (Alana) and it didn’t get a single nomination. He has been the consummate sideman for many years, known by all in the industry and many fewer outside of it. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.
  2. I congratulate the board and all of the volunteers who made it the most memorable awards night, at least for me. I think they did an outstanding job of honoring the recently deceased Don Ho, as well as other legends who have left us and who are still with us. They did so while providing ample time for the next generation to shine along side them.
  3. Lehua Kalima-Heine needs to put out a solo CD. Yesterday. What a voice and what a wonderful person.
  4. Kalapana needs to put out a CD with new material. Yesterday. They are too damn talented in every facet of music to be relegated to the status of nostalgia band.
  5. If you ever need to figure out where to eat late in Honolulu, ask a working musician. As my wife and I were waiting with Kenneth and Tasha Makuakāne in the parking garage at the convention center, it was fun listening to the musicians rattle off a list of all the restaurants that were either open or closed at that time. Wendell Ching seemed to be the most knowledgeable.
  6. There was a mini-uproar in the local recording community regarding the entry of Katchafire, a New Zealand band, in the reggae category. Crisis averted when Brother Noland won. Katchafire’s entry was within the rules, but my thoughts to the people who objected – if you are HARA members, communicate with the board. If you are not a member, either join up or shut up.
  7. Surprises – Keali‘i not taking Christmas Album and Nā Palapalai getting shut out.
  8. Feeling sad that I won’t be at next year’s show.
  9. It was great to run into former HARA office manager Bonnie Ryder at the show. Wishing her the best with everything she does.
  10. It was truly and honor to have my name appear next to Kenneth Makuakāne’s in two categories, particularly two adjudicated categories like Haku Mele and Engineering, and a pleasure to share a table with Kenneth and his wife, my family and Lehua Kalima-Heine. I wouldn’t trade family and friends like that for every Hōkū that has ever been awarded.
