Podcast #045 9/10/06, rough translation:
Greetings everyone, this is Keola and mahalo for listening to the Nahenahe.net podcast #45. Today is Sunday, September 10, 2006.
This is a very special podcast, a tribute and memorial podcast for Theresa Haunani Bernardino, a beloved teacher, friend and co-worker who passed away two weeks ago. She was not well known among the younger people of the Hawai‘i recording industry, however, she was well known in the era known as the Hawaiian renaissance. She sang with Haunani Apoliona, Aaron Mahi and Eldon Akamine in the group known as Kaimana. I have several songs to play for you from their release entitled “Nā Pua O Hawai‘i.” This release cannot be purchased on CD today, however, I have a copy of the LP, and w as given permission by Lea Uehara to play some cuts from it in this podcast as the LP was released by Pumehana Records. Thank you so much Lea for allowing me to play this music wonderful music in this podcast as a way to honor our dear friend. I will try to chose some songs in which you can clearly hear Haunani’s gentle voice.
Here is a song written by Haunani, and which was chosen as the first place winner in the Search For Songs Contest in 1976. You will first hear Haunani Apoliona, then she will be joined by Haunani Bernardino as a harmony voice, then Haunani B. will take the lead. I hope you enjoy this beautiful song.
Play “Lei Pukana” by Kaimana
You folks perhaps recognzied the voice of Haunani Apoliona, but Haunani Bernardino’s voice was equally as sweet, wasn’t it. You can clearly see that if she had chosen to pursue a career in recording Hawaiian music, she would probably be equally famous. However, she chose the path of educating the youth of Hawai’i, teaching classes in Hawaiian music at both the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, and for the past 17 year or so, at the University of Hawai’i at Hilo. I was a student of Haunani’s in the first year I was a student at UH-Hilo, and later, her colleague in Ka Haka ‘Ula o Ke’elikōlani College of Hawaiian music. She taught thousands of student about the Hawaiian language and Hawaiian music, and is deeply missed by all.
Here is the members of Kaimana singing “Kawaipunaoha‘ao” a name song written by Mary Kawena Pūku‘i and Mālia Craver for Mālia’s first grandchild
Play “Kawaipunaoha‘ao” by Kaimana
May God guard and care for you Haunani. We have been left with our unending gratitude for all you have done. Aloha.
Drop: Kenneth Makuakāne
Thank you Kenneth for recording that announcement. Kenneth has some great news also, his brand new CD, his first as a solo artist, is now complete. It is in California being manufactured right now, and will be released by the end of the month. While I do have copies of the complete songs, I will only play some short cuts from the CD, so give a listen…
Play Samples 1-10 from “Makuakāne”
Now, that was 10 songs. For most Hawaiian CDs, people are happy with 10 songs. But on “Mākuakāne” there are twenty. Here are samples from the last 10 songs…
Play Samples 11-20 from “Makuakāne”
So my friends, those are short samples of the twenty songs on this new CD by Kenneth Makuakāne which is entitled “Makuakāne”. I am very excited because Kenneth and I collaborated on 16 of the songs, and I assisted him with the CD jacket, liner notes and his website as well. I will certainly play music from the CD in upcoming podcasts, as will many other Hawai’i podcasters.
That’s all I have for you this week, my friends. Until we meet again next week, take care.
